LIHU‘E — All of Kaua‘i Community Federal Credit Union’s five offices participated in a food drive to help raise funds and collect canned goods for the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank.
The two-week campaign, which started during International Credit Union Week, raised over $3,500 in donations and approximately 4,000 pounds of food.
To inspire the employees of the credit union, management challenged each branch office by rewarding the office with the highest average in weight collected, as well as rewarding the branch office with the highest average in cash donations.
The reward was a free lunch for the winning office(s) along with personal time off for each employee. The employee ho brought in the most weight in food items also received a free turkey or ham of their choice and personal time off.
The recipient of that award was Nora Shepherd of the Lihu‘e office who collected over 770 pounds of food.
“Our goal was to raise at least $1,000 and 1,000 pounds of food,” said Irving Soto, Vice President of Marketing and CUSO. “We never realized that the staff was more than willing to raise awareness within our community, as well as helping those in need. To raise funds, some employees even organized a bake sale and sold plate lunches to members.”
Besides having fun and success, Soto also wanted to thank the members of the credit union who got involved in the food drive by dropping off food items and cash donations at the branch offices.
The Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank (KIFB) is the smallest food bank in the state, yet feeds the largest population in the county, according to a hunger study.
