LIHU‘E — The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine rolled to an 82-47 victory over North Caroina Central in the opening day’s finale of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown, Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kamilah Jackson topped the Wahine in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with 19 points and 12 boards. She shot 7 of 12 from the floor and added two blocked shots to her scoring line.
Keisha Kanekoa scored 18 for Hawai‘i, adding seven rebounds and knocking down two 3-pointers.
Allie Patterson was 5 of 8 from the field on her way to 14 points.
Shanise Blanks and Chasidy Williams each scored 14 points for North Carolina Central, who also got 10 points from Jori Nwachukwu.
Hawai‘i was hot from the field, shooting over 48 percent as a team (31-for-64), compared to under 33 percent (16-for-49) for NC Central.
The Wahine crushed their opponent on the glass, 45-27, benefiting from second opportunities, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds.
Hawai‘i improves to 5-1 on the young season, having played all six games to this point on its home court.
The first day of the Showdown featured four games beginning at noon.
In the day’s opening game, North Carolina overpowered Washington State, 93-55. Italee Lucas had a game-high 21 points for the 15th-ranked Tar Heels.
Illinois then took care of business with a 69-48 win over Long Beach State.
The game of the day saw Mississippi eke out a 53-52 win over Gonzaga. Down 52-51 with 10 seconds left, the Rebels’ Valencia McFarland drove the length of the floor and scored with four seconds remaining to give Ole Miss the win. The Rebels trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half.
Another quadruple-header takes place today, beginning with Washington State taking on Long Beach State at 12:15 p.m.
That will be followed by North Carolina Central taking on Gonzaga at 2:30 pm.
North Carolina will then battle Illinois at 4:45 p.m., after which Hawai‘i will conclude the day’s action against Mississippi at 7 p.m.
