LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i abstract painter Tom Lieber, contemporary artist William T. Wiley and Galerie 103, located in the Kukui‘ula Shopping Center in Po‘ipu, will be making a “maiden voyage” next week from Kaua‘i to Art Basel Miami Beach 2010.
From Dec. 2 to 5, Galerie 103 will join more than 250 art galleries from around the world at Hotel Sagamore on Miami Beach.
Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 “combines an international selection of top galleries with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design,” according to the festival’s website.
This marks the first international-art-scene appearance for Galerie 103, in which it hopes to spread awareness that the contemporary Hawaiian art scene isn’t “merely” focused on celebrating the island’s natural beauty, states a press release from Galerie 103.
“Hawai‘i has become (as it should be) one of the centers of conceptual awareness and critical debate of many matters shaping human destiny, including global environmental issues,” the press release states.
“Kaua‘i’s own Doug Britt, Mac James and Bruna Stude examine these issues through their various media on view during Art Basel events.”
A number of Hawai‘i-based artists will be represented at the show, including 89-year-old Kathleen Adair Brown, Carol Bennett, Kimberlin Blackburn, Margaret Ezekiel, Sally French, Karen Gally, Ante Mandaric, Deyana Mielke, Christopher Reiner, Mark Van Wagner and Wayne Zebzda.
