LIHU‘E — Kaoli Kahokuloa pulled off a double victory in two main categories, grabbing first place in both the Boys 14-15 and 4-A Open divisions, Sunday in Hanalei.
A week after the Andy Irons memorial, the Hawai‘i Surfing Federation/YMCA Kaua‘i’s second contest of the season went off at Pine Trees in Hanalei, showcasing more of the island’s top young talent.
The water provided perfect conditions, according to event organizers, with two- to four-foot, glassy waves leading to high performance from all the competitiors.
Kahokuloa came through with a first-place showing in the 14-15 division, followed by Kalen Galtes, Luke Hitchcock and Tabin Shamblin rounding out the top four.
His second win in the 4-A category came over Elliott Leon in second, Chattson Barrett in third and Dylan Goodale in fourth.
Tatianna Weston-Webb came away with another win in the Girls 14-15 division, with Shania Weiss grabbing second, Kiana Fores and Maluhia Kinimaka taking third and fourth, respectively.
Hitchcock followed his third-place showing with a first-place win in the Men’s 18-24 division, as Shamblin, Barrett and Jesse Guglielmana came in second through fourth.
Roy Carvalho took home the title in the Juniors 16-17 competition, coming out ahead of second-place finisher Dorian Blanchard. Leon took third place and Troy Weston-Webb grabbed fourth.
The Girls 16-17 title went to Lianna Patey, who managed to top Brianna Cope, Fores and Jennifer Leon, who completed the top four.
Mainei Kinimaka was the champion in the Girls 13 Under division, while Sunny Patey and Ashlynn Owings took second and third, respectively.
The Boys 12-13 title went to Lucas Angulo, who came in first ahead of Pierre Graham in second, Noah Funaki in third and Kuio Young in fourth.
Kai McIntyre took the championship in the Menehune 11 Under competition, with Kainehe Hunt, Sage Tutterow and Sunny Patey completing the top four.
Backdoor/Hanalei Surf Company sponsored the event.
The third event of the HSF Kaua‘i season is scheduled for Jan. 29 at Intersections in Kekaha.
