A case for decriminalization
Concerning the “War on Drugs” … Ms. Makuaole, seems to have missed Mr. Tamm’s point, perhaps because of headline choice.
Ms. Makuaole, people make bad choices in their lives. Expecting the government to protect people from themselves only gives the government more power.
Mr. Tamm was mistaken when he said the “War on Drugs” started because of the Hippies. That war has been going on practically forever and its purpose has never been to stop drug use. One example is the Opium Wars between Britain and China around 1840. Britain basically forced China to continue importing opium.
There are many groups in the U.S., including within the government itself, which do not want to “win” the war on drugs. Indeed, the Oliver North used proceeds from selling crack cocaine in the slums of L.A. to finance the Iran-Contra affair during the Reagan administration.
Also, there are many stories about judges who get kick-backs from private prisons for sentencing children to jail for drug use. The war on drugs has corrupted our government.
Sending your children to jail for years is no way to help them. If you think they’ll hate you because you don’t approve of their drug use, they will despise you for putting them in jail, and then they will be lost forever. Unless someone comes up with a better idea, I support de-criminalization.

Use natural resources for energy — now!
It seem like everytime I input my opinion in the TGI Forum about KIUC my monthly utility bill goes up a notch. Well, here I go again.
KUIC received a federal loan for $110 million for their hydroelectronic plant improvement.
Hopefully, they (KIUC) expedite this improvement needed for the hydroelectronic plant with the federal loan money so we can be one step ahead and cut down on fossil fuel use.
KIUC, don’t be so one-track-minded and look into other alternatives beside water to generate power. Why not look into the sun and the wind to generate energy to power up, too?
We need to cut fossil fuel use here on Kaua‘i and use our natural resources (sun, wind and water) now!

Bravo, bravo
I will never grow … never grow … never grow … NEVER GROW UP.
Walt Disney brought us Disneyland, Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre brought us “Peter Pan.” I was blown away with Saturday’s performance.
After the show little kids were screaming and asking their playmates what part would you want to play. How did Peter, Wendy and John fly? Mom, I want to fly. Hook is mean. Nanna the dog, can we take him home?
Parents had smiling faces and joy in their hearts. A grandmother who came from California said her dream came true — she saw her grand-daughter on stage.
The music, the costumes, the lighting, the countless volunteers behind the sets, the volunteers at the ticket booth, the volunteers at the concession stand, Kaua‘i Frieght who made the young actors feel safe with giving them a trailer to change in and relax when they were not on stage. The director, choreographer, music director, etc.
Bravo!
Please allow me to ask you to invite your friends, neighbors, to please come support this wonderful show. Please help sell out this show and help HCT afford next year’s show.
Bravo to our mayor for supporting Kaua‘i’s children.
I will never grow up!

Science not fiction
Forty thousand years ago there was a little animal called eohippus. He stood eighteen inches high at the shoulder, had three toes on the fore and four toes on the hind feet and weighed under 50 pounds. Today we call him the horse. That’s evolution.
The theory of evolution is science not fiction. That Darwin’s theory of “survival of the fittest” was misused does not negate it.
If the creationists wish to believe pandas sprang full-blown 4,000 years ago, that’s their right. It’s a free country.
But, in 2002, Judge Jones in a Pennsylvania court ruled that creationism was nothing but religion in scientific guise and must, therefore, not be taught in science classes.
I think every school should teach a course in comparative religion. The silly things believers will believe is a fascinating study. Please read The Mind of the Bible Believer by Dr. Edmund D. Cohen.

Keep the aloha spirit alive
Having just returned from Kaua‘i, I wanted to say I really appreciated the “Aloha Spirit” shown to us by the “older” residents.
My concern for Kaua‘i is the new generation of big-truck driving, tattooed, spiky haired, wannabe bad boys who are too ignorant and too arrogant to realize tourism is an extremely important part of their economy.
We have enough of these kinds here on the Mainland! Please don’t let the “Aloha Spirit” disappear.
