The Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics relay team earned two sectional times at the Hawai‘i Senior Championships last weekend on O‘ahu.
According to Stacey Machorek of SKA, this was historic because the relay team became the first team from Kaua‘i to earn a sectional time cut.
Sophie Britzmann, Anya Littlefield, Kate Machorek, and Yasmine Ware made up the relay team that achieved the cut in the 200 Yard and 400 Yard Freestyle Relays in Manoa.
The achievement qualifies the team to compete at the Western Region Senior Sectionals in March at Federal Way, Wash., Stacey said.
“I was so impressed with how the girls raced, and their relay splits,” said Billy Brown, SKA coach. “They had some unbelievable performances.”
Individually, all four girls placed in the Top 16 in numerous individual events during the three-day meet, 11 being Top 8 finishes. Overall, they accumulated 335.5 points to place in seventh place overall.
“This was an amazing accomplishment given that they were the third smallest team there,” Stacey said in an e-mail.
Ware finished the meet in third place overall among the girls, Littlefield finished eighth, Machorek, enjoying her first Senior meet, ended in 27th, and Britzmann rounded out the accomplishments in 49th overall.
Among her achievements, Ware earned a sectional time on her 50 Yard Freestyle on a 24.72 swim, that performance earning her a second place in the event.
She also collected a second finish in the 100 Backstroke (1:00.83), a fourth place in the 100 Freestyle (54:55), a fifth place in the 200 Individual Medley (2:16.46) and a sixth place in the 200 Backstroke (2:15.97).
Littlefield put up incredibly fast times in the distance events, Stacey said. She cut 7.77 off her seeded time in the 1650 Freestyle (17:59.22) for a second overall finish in the event.
She also earned a second place in the 500 Freestyle (5:14.21).
Littlefield finished fourth in the 200 Butterfly (2:15.78) and sixth in the 200 Freestyle (2:00.56) en route to her eighth-overall finish.
Kate, in her first Senior Meet, finished in the Top 8 in two events, blasting 15.28 seconds off her seeded time in the 500 Freestyle (5:29.65) for a Zone time, and eighth place in the finals.
Her 200 Backstroke (2:16.38) was 13.98 seconds better than her seeded time, and Kate rounded out her strong showing with another Zone time, this one coming in the 200 Freestyle where she touched at 2:03.53).
Britzmann’s top event came in the 400 IM, one of the tough events in swimming, where she touched at 5:05.80.
That swim was good enough to take 7.80 seconds off her seeded time for a 14th place finish.
