LIHU‘E — The energy and enthusiasm of the Lihu‘e Pop Warner Association cheerleaders echoed through the old Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
The Patriots’ cheer squad, wrapping up practice for their trip to the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance competition, trotted over to the center from their practice site at Isenberg Field where they were treated to a gift from the East Kaua‘i Lions Club.
Lion Kelvin Moniz, himself a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation official, explained to the girls that the club was supporting their bid for a title at the national competition in Florida in early December.
The cheer squad had been undertaking a series of fundraisers to help offset expenses for the trip, including hosting a softball tournament this weekend at the Anne Knudsen Park in Koloa where the field has grown to nine teams.
“We can still use one more team,” chirped one of the cheerleaders.
The East Kaua‘i Lions Club presented the girls with a contribution for $250 out of one of its committees to help the girls with their trip.
“Thank you!” the girls said, following that unanimous chorus with squeals as a clap of thunder accompanied the presentation.
Lion Roy Nishida said he remembers these trips to Florida because about seven years ago, his granddaughter was a member of the Lihu‘e Patriots cheer squad.
The cheerleaders are scheduled to take the competition floor at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida on Dec. 6, the first day of competition in the week-long national championships.
The Lihu‘e Patriots will be participating in the Junior Pee Wee Division and earned the eligibility to advance during the island-wide Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League Cheer Championships in October at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
