The 2010 Kaua‘i Marathon will hit the airwaves starting Thursday, said Robin Jumper, the public relations coordinator for the Kaua‘i Marathon.
John Sandy Productions TV, in association with the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau, had the opportunity to film this year’s event in what was described as “the most breathtaking destination marathons in the entire world.”
JSPTV crews were on Kaua‘i to cover the entire week of activities leading to the marathon, utilizing five on-course cameras, two roving Jeep cameras as well as the start and finish line coverage, states a Kaua‘i Marathon release.
The 2010 Kaua‘i Marathon will be nationally aired on regional sports networks across the United States starting November through January and is estimated to reach more than 120 million homes, states the JSPTV website.
Dickie Chang, host of the locally-produced “Wala‘au” television show, started airing footage from Tuesday, Jumper said.
Jumper said coming on the heels of the successful 2010 Kaua‘i Marathon, organizers announced a new division for the 2011 event — the 4-person relay team for the 26.2-mile marathon course only.
Team divisions include male, female, coed and corporate. In the coed division, at least two women must be part of the team.
All leadoff runners will start at the same time as other marathon runners, 6 a.m. in front of Keoki’s restaurant on Po‘ipu Road, Sept. 4, 2011.
The first leg covers 8.6 miles and includes the start to Oma‘o Road and Highway 50. The second leg covers 5.1 miles and spans the Oma‘o Road intersection to Lawai Cannery where the third leg, a 7.4-mile segment, goes from the Lawai Cannery through the Kalaheo loop, returning to Lawai Cannery. The final leg, a 5.1-mile run, takes the team from the Lawai Cannery to the finish line.
Registration for this new division can be done immediately by visiting http://active.com.
In addition to this new division, Jumper said Kaua‘i Marathon will be offering special kama‘aina and Active Military rates from Dec. 1-15.
During this period, the new 4-person relay team entry fee will feature a $25 discount from its $250 entry fee. This special is available only at active.com.
The 2011 half-marathon entry fee will be discounted to $40 from its normal kama‘aina fee of $65, and the full marathon entry will drop to $60 from its normal $95 kama‘aina rate.
To qualify for the discounts, registrants need to fill out the “Kama‘aina Holiday Promotion” entry found when visiting the Kaua‘i Marathon website at www.thekauaimarathon.com.
Completed forms need to be mailed to The Kaua‘i Marathon, P.O. Box 573, Koloa, HI 96756, postmarked by Dec. 15.
Jumper said, not only does The Kaua‘i Marathon lead runners through one of the world’s most beautiful marathon and half-marathon courses, it also contributes to local non-profit organizations when event organizers, Bob Craver, race director, was joined by Liz and Jeff Sacchini, race founder, in delivering checks of $1,000 to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank, and $5,000 to the Kapa‘a High School Project Graduation program.
