KOLOA — Sunday Dillberg topped a field of more than 190 participants in the Old Koloa Sugar Mill Run, Saturday.
Dillberg set the pace for the field with her first overall finish, stopping the clock at 19:52, or a 6:24 mile pace. She was followed by Kaua‘i High School cross country runner Jared Okayama at 20:43, or a 6:40 pace.
The 5K Run/Walk was one of three facets of the 8th annual Old Koloa Sugar Mill Run sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i. The race followed a course on the Koloa bypass road from Anne Knudsen Park in Koloa.
Participants, estimated to be close to 400 during the race packet pick-up, Friday, were treated to breakfast following the race and received an event T-shirt or tank top.
Bob Banks stopped the clock at 36:39 for first place in the 10K race, holding a 5:54 mile pace over the field of more than 90 participants.
He was followed about three minutes back by Daniel Sanchez stopping the clock at 39:47 for second place overall at a 6:25 pace.
Erin Cafaro, finishing third overall, was the first female to cross in the 10K. Her 6:55 mile pace stopped the clock at 42:55, followed by Theresa Gonzales, finishing seventh overall, at 46:02, or a 7:25 pace.
Nicholas Clark was the first in the 10-mile event with a run of 1:03:00, a 6:18 mile pace in the field of more than 85 participants.
Joshua Herr, another Kaua‘i High School cross country runner, crossed in second on a 1:08:18, or a 6:49 pace followed by Michael Helppie (1:09:19, 6:55 pace).
Taryn Holstrom, finishing 14th overall, was the first female to cross in the 10-mile run, stopping the clock at 1:18:10, or a 7:49 pace. She was followed by Jennifer Stock, crossing 18th overall at 1:20:22, or an 8:02 pace.
Proceeds from the event benefit the nursing and electronics technology programs at Kaua‘i Community College and the RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Award.
During the 2008 run, the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i was able to provide five students with $1,000 scholarships, three KCC nursing and two KCC electronics technology students.
The event was made possible through the cooperation and support from The Bone and Joint Center at Kaua‘i Medical Clinic, Grove Farm Company, Chevron Hawai‘i, the County of Kaua‘i, Kaua‘i Springs, and numerous community donors. Tom Lodico was this year’s event chair.
