“One is always gone too soon. But at that very moment, their life is complete.” Andy Irons was one of them…Aloha ‘Oe Andy, R.I.P.

To Andy’s mother,
Thank you so much for raising a loving son who truly touched the hearts of my grandchildren Raiatea, Hawaiki, Manoa, & Kaiana Oliver.

Your legacy will live on.

Andy was the fastest, most powerful surfer ever and the only surfer I ever saw complete moves on riding powerful lips and tubes in places I have never seen anyone ride, in all my years. He was beyond good, he was untouchable on a good day of surf. I wonder if we will ever see those moves ever again? God bless him and his family.

I will never forget the nights when Andy, Riddler, and I lived together; we would cook up amazing meals and drink huge glasses of red wine together and reflect on amateur days traveling with Riddle, our childhood coach. You will be missed but your smile and legacy will go on forever. You were hero to us all. Our champ.
Miss you brother Andy.
Megan Abubo
Andy was like a brother to me… I am devastated… I will never get used to my hero being gone 🙁
Keala Kennelly
Andy was the best ever surfer from Hawai‘i outside of Duke Kahanamoku, Like he said I will never change no matter how many world titles I have, I’m just a humble guy from Kaua‘i.

Your special friends in Anahola
I am not a surfer but come from a family of surfers and like everyone else; shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Andy Irons. We were proud of all his accomplishments and he will sorely be missed by everyone around the world and especially by the people of Kaua‘i from the keiki to kupunas.. …Condolences to his ohana; especially his wife and soon to be newborn son. May you rest in peace Andy!
Sue Strickland & Ohana, Anahola, Kaua`i
He graciously shared his talent and enthusiasm for life with us. He will be greatly missed and not forgotten. Kauai’s loss is also ours.
David James, Dallas, Texas
I’m lucky to have watched Andy and his brother rip since keikis. AMAZING. Three guys made fun of the ‘A IRONS’ tank I was wearing “suggesting” I wish I knew Andy. Just then, Andy appeared, put his arm around me and said “nice tank Zak, you got a couple of good rides out there.” The guys slinked off. I like Bobo’s (at Hanalei Surf Co) idea – let’s hang ribbons from the Hanalei Bridge to Pine Trees.
P.S. I’ll wear that tank every Tuesday till I die or the tank dies.
Zak Zakour
Aloha o’e Andy… may you rest in Peace my friend, I’ll always remember what a gentlemen you are, in the water and on the shore.

Lu‘ulu‘u —
in memory of Andy Irons
The dead are not drowning.
We are, in memory of them.
Who can teach us how to grieve
if not the dead?
We paddle out at Pine Trees
on faded blue and yellow boards,
no matter the high swells.
It rains for days
and we say, this is how it should be.
We do not want to squint
into the Kaua‘i sun.
We jump off the pier in Hanalei
and let our bodies sink,
our limbs like starfish,
our hair floating toward
something we cannot see.
Then we fold
our origami hearts.
His baby will be born
from the body of grief.
We will catch the island mother
in our arms.
Lucy Lee, Kilauea
The world was a better place with you, Andy, but Heaven is rejoicing! Eddie, Todd, Dale and others must have been there with open arms.
Lana Lundgren, Princeville
(Translated from Spanish) In the ocean in the sky you can get and still enjoy those endless waves, I hope that when we get there one day you are waiting at the peak, you were an inspiration to all who belong to this wonderful sport, we will miss you Andy.
Lichy Tagliaferri, Argentina
As the lei filled canoes go out, what a great aerial shot this would be; Everyone holding hands all the way around Hanalei Bay… for Andy.

I recently sent an e-mail to the County Council members suggesting that Pine Trees Beach Park be renamed the Andy Irons Memorial Beach Park. It would be a special way to honor one of the best surfers of all time.
