WAIPOULI — They have been in business for just three weeks, but already business is brisk.
Sugar Mill Cupcakes, described as a “mobile cupcakery,” was one of the vendors people could browse through, and in this case, sample wares, at the Kapa‘a Middle School music festival fundraiser Sunday at the Courtyard by Marriott Kaua‘i at Coconut Beach.
“They’ve only been in business for three weeks,” said Theresa Morita, who shared a table with the new cupcake-bakers. “We had samples during one of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation volleyball games. Those were for the officials, and maybe we’ll have some more when the next season rolls around.”
Tiare Shim and Westy Kessler have both enjoyed baking and, between them, spent hours perfecting their cupcake recipes.
Now they combine their talents to bake cupcakes using Kaua‘i ingredients, the old-fashioned way, from scratch. The result is a selection of gourmet cupcakes baked daily and delivered islandwide.
Kaua‘i fresh eggs, Kaua‘i coffee and Kaua‘i chocolate are just some of the locally produced ingredients that go into creating the gourmet cupcakes that start from $2 a cake.
Orders are placed through the Internet with 48 hours allowed for special orders, and in minimum lots of half a dozen or a dozen cupcakes.
The two friends take it from there, with orders available for weddings — their specialty — birthdays, graduation, business meetings, or just because it’s time for a snack.
Because they are people, custom orders are available as well as suggestions for party orders.
“There are no limits to the kind of cupcakes we can bake for you,” states the Sugar Mill Cupcakes website.
Menu offerings fall into three categories: specialty cupcakes, Build a Cupcake, and Party Treats, with three different assortments to select from. Additionally, the cupcakery offers a flavor of the week.
Cupcake orders are delivered islandwide. For orders in the Kapa‘a and Kalaheo areas, there is no delivery charge. For orders outside of these areas (Hanalei, Princeville, Kilauea, Lihu‘e, Koloa and Waimea) there is a $25 delivery surcharge, according to the company’s website.
