NAWILIWILI — OZone came out of the pack to establish a clear lead that stood for the Halloween race, Sunday at Nawiliwili Harbor.
Working in relatively flat water and gentle breezes in the 5-12 knot range, the Olson 30, taken over by a crew of pirates, stayed ahead of OZone, loaded with a crew of super heroes, to cross on an elapsed sail of 45:20 and correcting to 45:24 PHRF.
OZone, who overcame the second lap where the superheroes flew its spinnaker on end, crossed in second with a 47:33 elapsed sail and corrected to 47:37 PHRF.
Papa‘au, its name papered over with “SS Minnow,” crossed on a 50:39 elapsed and corrected to 48:29 PHRF followed by Speedy, looking for its orchestra as “Titanic,” crossed on an elapsed sail of 50:45 and correcting to 50:50 PHRF.
Coyote, unsure of its identity as a sailboat, the “Pride of America,” or the “Pride of Nawiliwili,” puffed a cloud of smoke from its stack before the race along some short courses that afforded spectators maximum viewing of the costumed characters that overtook the sailing vessels for the Halloween afternoon race.
Coyote crossed the line on a 57:22 elapsed sail and corrected out to 53:44 PHRF and 44:33 Club for first place in that class.
Sharon Gibson, transforming to Wilma Flintstone with Fred Flintstone, aka Doug Gibson, manning the race flags, said this race will not be trophied, the final Nawiliwili Yacht Club race ending the year two weeks ago with the final race in the NYC Lloyd Rees Memorial Series.
Despite this, the race drew a spectrum of fans to the jetty wall, one visitor asking if this was normal for Halloween on Kaua‘i.
The superheroes aboard OZone may not have the skill to know which end of the spinnaker is up, but shone on the grill where they served up healthy portions of huli huli chicken and ribs, Capt. Joel taking over the NYC Clubhouse as DJ and getting everyone onto the floor.
In this atmosphere, Coyote captured not only top honors for the Club class, but was voted the Best Boat Theme for its multi-personalities that spanned the NCL Pride of America to the grandeur of the Nawiliwili Harbor aboard its C&C 38 framework.
Bruce Raymond, one of the pirates aboard Fast Company, captured the Best Individual Male Costume, and Cheryl Nickles, the bride of Andy aboard Papa‘au, aka USS Minnow, took home the Best Female Costume.
NYC will be out of the water until December when it hosts its annual Lighted Boat parade.
