The two were brought safely to shore at approximately 7:05 p.m. after being swept out to sea by a rip current roughly 400 yards from the Pila‘a Channel, a county news release states.
Firefighters Micah Thayer and Nick Hill from the Hanalei station utilized a rescue board and a rescue tube and flashlights to retrieve the swimmers in distress.
Fire rescue specialist Aaron Hawthorne from the Lihu‘e station also swam out to the swimmers on a rescue board with a flashlight and provided assistance.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter unit from Barber’s Point was also contacted for assistance, but their services were canceled after the swimmers were rescued.
