LIHU‘E — Following the completion of the second day of action at the jam-packed Lihu‘e Lanes, Kaua‘i’s Tevin Nakashima finished in sixth place at the Billy Tees/HHSAA Bowling State Championships, Friday in Lihu‘e.
The Red Raider roller put together a nine-game total of 1,786 pins for a 198 average and was recognized for his strong performance as one of the top 15 boys bowlers in the state.
The Kaua‘i girls team finished in fifth place in the girls event, putting together a pinfall of 6,986, led by Darcie Vea, who came in 21st place with a 1,486 total (165 average).
Kelsey Cadiente followed with a 1,452 total, with Jorden De Costa (1,418) and Malia Garcia (1,339) also rolling nine games. Fellow Raiders Dyann Layguen (902 pins in six games) and Alisa Padasdgo (389 in three games) chipped in, as well.
Kapa‘a’s Joanna Chang had a 1,372 pinfall in nine games (152 average).
The girls event was won by wide margin as Kapolei ran away with the title, putting together a 7,643 total. That was a full 450 pins better than second place Punahou.
Mililani (7,054) and Waiakea (7,037) finished just ahead of Kaua‘i, as Maryknoll (6,879), Kalaheo (6,704) and Baldwin (6,380) rounded out the eight-team standings.
Kalaheo’s Tammi Sakaguchi was the top girls individual bowler with a 1,718 total (191 average). She was followed by a pair of Kapolei rollers in Shaianne Yockman (1,700) and Valerie Ibarra (1,682) in second and third, respectively.
Back on the boys side, it was Kailua’s Austin Patacsil who ran away with first place at 1,940 (216 average), 77 pins ahead of second place Aaron Yamamoto (1,863; 207 average).
Waimea’s Chase Ueno put together a 1,680 pin total (187 average), which was good for 20th place.
Kaua‘i’s John Quisel was the next KIF bowler in the ranks with a 1,558 total, followed by teammates Ammon Hoopii Akau (1,435), Kyle Balisacan (1,112 in seven games), James Ruiz (649 in five games), Joseph Nebre (506 in four games) and Elson Tanimoto (232 in two games).
The Kaua‘i team finished in eighth place with a 7,278 combined pinfall.
Pearl City won the boys team title with an 8,528 total.
Mililani (8,466), Kalani (8,167), Hawai‘i Baptist Academy (8,001), Baldwin (7,833), Iolani (7,658) and Waiakea (7,515) came in second through seventh, respectively.
