LIHU‘E — The Waimea Lady Menehune lost a heartbreaker in their first round match of the HHSAA Div. II Girls Volleyball State Championships, falling 3-2 to Kalaheo, Wednesday night at McKinley High School on O‘ahu.
Waimea fell by a 25-22, 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13 score and will now continue on in the Div. II consolation bracket.
The Lady Menehune were led by Jayme Jacinto’s 25 kills and got 13 kills, seven blocks and three aces from Brandee Victorino.
Kalaheo’s Jowell Guerreiro and Ashlyn Anduha had 22 and 20 kills, respectively.
The Waimea girls dropped the opening set, but stormed back to take a 2-1 lead in a tight third set, only to see Kalaheo fight back for the narrow victory.
After putting together a 12-1 season in the KIF, Waimea will now take on Seabury Hall in the consolation round at 3:30 p.m. today at McKinley.
A win over Seabury would mean one final match, taking place at 1 p.m. on Saturday at McKinley.
Seabury was also relegated to the one-loss group after a 3-1 (26-24, 25-13, 21-25, 25-21) defeat at the hands of Leilehua in the match that preceded the Waimea contest. Ashlee Vaoifi had a match-high 14 kills for Leilehua in the victory.
In other Div. II action from around the grounds, St. Francis was a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-13) winner over Kau in the opening match of the evening at Kalani High School.
Leilehua will move on to take on No. 4 Hawai‘i Prep at 5 p.m. tonight in the quarterfinals held at McKinley. St. Francis advances to take on No. 2 Molokai at 5 p.m. at Kalani.
Hawai‘i Baptist came away with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-18, 25-19) over Honoka‘a and will now move on to face No. 3 Roosevelt.
That match will take place at 7 p.m. tonight at Kalani.
Seabury Hall and Kau move on to the consolation bracket.
In Div. I play, Waiakea came away with a 3-2 comeback win (25-19, 21-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-7) over Castle in the first round. It will now advance to the quarters to take on No. 2 Kamehameha-Maui, tonight at 7 p.m. on Kamehameha’s home court.
Kaiser also advanced to the quarters with a 3-1 win (26-24, 12-25, 25-23, 25-17) over Moanalua. No. 4 Kamehameha-Big Island will now be Kaiser’s opponent, tonight at 5 p.m. at King Kekaulike High School on Maui.
Top-seeded Punahou will take on Mililani after Mililani’s 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-21, 25-14) of King Kekaulike in the first round. That match will take place at 7 p.m. at Kine Kekaulike High.
No. 3 Kahuku will face Kamehameha-Kapalama, after its 3-0 win (25-12, 25-12, 25-17) over Pearl City.
