LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Red Raiders girls squad finished in sixth place at the Civilian Marskmanship Program/HHSAA Air Riflery State Championships, Tuesday at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on O‘ahu.
On the boys side, the Waimea Menehune also took sixth place of the eight teams competing for a state crown.
The girls state title went to Sacred Hearts, with a point total of 2,106 as all four shooters tallied more than 500 points.
Punahou finished second with 2,054, followed by Waiakea (2,004), Kalani (1,987), Pearl City (1,930), Kaua‘i (1,841) and Molokai (1,761).
Brianne Hornos led the Raider Wahine squad with a 490 total, taking 183 in the Prone position, 136 Standing and 171 Kneeling. She finished in 24th place as an individual.
Britney Fernandez followed Hornos with a 473 series (183-124-166). Kristyn Yamamotoya put up a 472 (173-126-173) and Meghan Fujimoto had a 406 (157-112-137).
Sacred Hearts had the top three individual scorers as Kristie Thornburg, Cecilia Wong and Michelle Uchida had totals of 540, 538 and 527, respectively.
The boys championship went to Waiakea, who just snuck past second place Pearl City by six points (2,053 to 2,047).
In third was Kalani (1,990), followed by Baldwin (1,978), Punahou (1,957), Waimea (1,950), Kamehameha (1,925) and Moanalua (1,903).
The Waimea boys were led by Bryle Rivera, who scored a 186 Prone, 145 Standing and 175 Kneeling for a 506 series. That score got him 16th place overall.
Amlan Fujimara had a 491 (189-136-166) for 23rd place, John Medeiros fired a 486 (176-145-165) for 27th and Austin Kunishige had a 467 (173-134-160) for 34th.
Kamehameha’s Keanu Paikai had the top individual score with a 552 (194-177-181).
Island School’s Justin Riley-Louis also competed as an individual scorer and came in 33rd with a 470 (184-129-157).
Bowling tourney this week in Lihu‘e
LIHU‘E — The Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association and title sponsor Billy Tees will hold the 37th annual high school bowling state championships, Thursday and Friday at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
Kaua‘i High School will have its boys and girls teams representing the KIF after each team came away with the 2010 league title.
Thursday’s opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m., with the first boys session running from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The boys will then roll another three-game session from 11:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
The girls will start their first session at 2:45 p.m., with the second series running from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday’s championship rounds will see the boys competing from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., while the girls will then conclude the event from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony will be held after the girls finale.
Cross country runs Thursday on O‘ahu
LIHU‘E — The HHSAA Honolulu Marathon Cross Country State Championships will take place Thursday on O‘ahu.
The Kapa‘a boys and Kaua‘i girls teams will be in attendance to compete, as well as Island School individual Pierce Murphy when competition begins at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park.
The girls race is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m., with the boys following at 9:45 a.m.
The awards presentation is set for 10:45 a.m.
There is no admission or parking fee to attend.
Kapa‘a is one of 15 boys scoring teams competing, with 33 non-scoring schools also represented.
The Kaua‘i girls are one of 14 scoring teams competing.
Results will be posted at www.sportshigh.com at the conclusion of each race.
Waimea girls take on Kalaheo tonight
LIHU‘E — Entering the tournament unseeded after a 12-1 season in the KIF, the Waimea Lady Menehune girls volleyball squad will begin its run at a high finish in the HHSAA Div. II tournament by taking on Kalaheo tonight.
In what will be the second match of the tournament, Waimea will play Kalaheo at 7 p.m. at McKinley High School.
If they are able to come through with a victory, the Lady Menehune will then take on the tournament’s top seed, University. That match would take place Thursday at 7 p.m., again at McKinley.
