HANAPEPE — Kapa‘a quarterback Daniel Reis passed for a touchdown and ran in a keeper for another to lead the Junior Varsity Warriors to a 14-8 win, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Coming off a loss at the hands of the Kaua‘i Red Raiders during Kapa‘a’s homecoming celebration last week, Kapa‘a lost little time asserting itself.
Reis capped the opening kickoff series on a slant up the rightside for the game’s first kickoff, a 25-yard keeper play at the 8:05 mark.
Warrior kicker T.J. West graced the touchdown by splitting the uprights for the point-after, his first of two successful PAT boots in the game.
On the ensuing series, Waimea’s drive was interrupted when Trevor McCracken plucked a Waimea pass on the Waimea 36-yard line.
But the Menehune regained possession on its own 11-yard line when Tysen Banasihan recovered a fumble.
Kamalei Compoc-Dela Cruz pulled in a pass on the next play, running it back for an 87-yard touchdown, Compoc-Dela Cruz’s PAT boot coming up empty.
Taking a 7-6 edge into the second quarter, Kapa‘a found paydirt late in the period when Reis found Reese Hickse-Whetsel all alone on the far side for a 31-yard touchdown, Hickse-Whetsel getting stopped up by Waimea’s Cy Corona and Derek Callejo, but not before crossing the plane with 2:59 remaining in the half.
The final score came in the fourth quarter when Waimea emerged with a safety when the Kapa‘a punter got a bad snap for the final accounting.
The win ends Kapa‘a JV’s season on a winning note while Waimea prepares to travel to Vidinha Stadium, Saturday where it will meet the Kaua‘i Red Raiders for the final time this season starting at 12:30 p.m.
