The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will completely close the Kalalau Trail for one day — Wednesday — to conduct repairs to eroded sections of the two-mile trail segment between Ke‘e Beach Park and Hanakapi‘ai Stream, which is most heavily used by hikers.
No hiking will be allowed at all on the trail that day, a DLNR news release states.
The remaining nine miles of the trail from Hanakapi‘ai to Kalalau is presently closed as part of an eight-week, multi-part maintenance project to address a mix of public safety, and natural and cultural resource management issues at Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park on Kaua‘i’s North Shore. The project includes a rockfall mitigation project above the Ho‘ole‘a waterfall and shoreline sea cave areas at Kalalau Valley, removal of illegal campsites and rubbish, public hunting of feral pigs and goats and park improvements.
The park is scheduled to reopen Nov. 1. For more information go to www.hawaiistateparks.org or contact the Division of State Parks.
