Remember Jan. 3, 2007
In response to David Thorp’s letter of September 21, 2010 (“Reality-based Obama”), I like David very much, and respect his intellect. However, our political opinions diverge.
January 3, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress.
At the time:
The Dow Jones closed at 12,621.77;
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5 percent;
The unemployment rate was 4.6 percent;
George Bush’s economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!
Remember the day… Jan. 3, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee. The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy? BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!!!
THANK YOU DEMOCRATS for taking us from 13,000 Dow, 3.5 GDP and 4.6 percent unemployment… to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOS! (BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie — starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the U.S. economy).
And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac???? OBAMA! And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie??? OBAMA and the Democratic Congress.
So when you try to blame Bush… REMEMBER JAN. 3, 2007…. THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!
Whenever a Democrat, or any politician for that matter, promises projects or programs for YOU, check to see if your wallet is still there. YOU have to pay for it!
Sincerely,
Mike Curtis, Koloa
Now works out in Lihu‘e
In response to Michellel Carroll’s Oct. 11 letter regarding the closing of the Princeville Health Club (“A community ignored”):
Aloha Michellel,
I am a Princeville resident who recently joined the Kaua‘i Athletic Club in Lihu‘e. Phyllis Stanwood, general manager of the Kaua‘i Athletic Club, recently announced that the club would waive the initiation fee for Princeville Health Club members who wish to transfer in. I thought that was awfully nice of them. She can be reached at 245-5381.
The club is very well equipped — with a pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, shower/locker facilities, racquetball courts, weight rooms, cardio rooms, and more. Best of all, it is staffed with friendly, well-qualified trainers who conduct all sorts of free fitness classes, and even provide an individual, one-hour training session for new members.
Like Princeville, there are massage therapists available, and there is also babysitting for members’ children. KAC offers special low rates for seniors, even free memberships available through Humana/Silver Sneakers. I’ve only been a member for seven weeks, but I already feel at home there.
I know it’s a long drive from Princeville, but my husband and I plan our shopping, business and doctor trips to include a stop at the Kaua‘i Athletic Club, so it hasn’t been too bad for us. We’d love to carpool with other Princeville residents, if anyone could put that together.
I understand your disappointment in not having a facility in Princeville, but I’ve found the Kaua‘i Athletic Club to be worth the drive.
Toni Morath, Princeville
Ideas for North Shore workouts
The letter from Lynne Glaser in Oct. 19th editorials ( “Ideas for North Shore workouts?”) asked for “Ideas” —
The Kaua‘i Athletic Club is offering free initiation to Princeville Health Club and Spa members through the end of the year with a complimentary workout to try the club. The KAC has monthly memberships and play cards of 10 visits, and offers a large variety of classes.
Tai chi classes with Dr. Skip Rush will continue at the Princeville Community Association office and Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park.
KAUA‘I BODY WORKS will offer classes and personal training at The Hanalei Bay Resort. Purefit will offer classes at the Hanalei Bay Resort. Two other groups are working on space for classes.
While the closing of the Princeville club is disappointing, the free market will rapidly meet the demand, and I hope pool facilities will become available.
Donn A. Carswell, Owner, Kaua‘i Athletic Club, Hanalei
How about a recycling article?
I have an article idea. You can write about recycling. More people on Kaua‘i are recycling these days, meaning we need more places to drop off our recyclables. The county is using its funds to pave new roads that aren’t needed, when we should be using the money for helping to save Earth. Even if it’s a little at a time. And you have permission to use something I said in an article, if needed.
