LIHU‘E — Breven Ako of Lihu‘e/Koloa (Beeksma) netted a hat trick, but a late-game goal by Hanapepe saw the Beeksma squad drop a 4-3 heartbreaker in the AYSO, Region 940, Boys Under 14 playoff, Tuesday at the North Vidinha field.
LIHU‘E — Breven Ako of Lihu‘e/Koloa (Beeksma) netted a hat trick, but a late-game goal by Hanapepe saw the Beeksma squad drop a 4-3 heartbreaker in the AYSO, Region 940, Boys Under 14 playoff, Tuesday at the North Vidinha field.
Ako, playing forward in a seven on nine match, netted the first goal only to have Hanapepe answer in a see-saw scoring affair.
“We thought we were going to a shoot-out with the game winding down,” said Mark Beeksma, coach of the Lihu‘e/Koloa team. “But we got one late goal and it was over.”
Hanapepe advanced to meet the Lihu‘e/Koloa team after getting past Kalaheo, 3-1 during the division opener, Saturday.
With the win, Hanapepe advances to the finals of the BU14, starting at 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at Hanapepe Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Beeksma team is still alive, playing Kalaheo, Thursday at Kalawai Field starting at 4:30 p.m.
Playoffs also took place for the Boys Under 12 between Kalaheo, winning its opening game, 2-1 over Lihu‘e, and Hanapepe.
The winner of that game advances to the championship game scheduled for Oct. 25 against the winner of Lihu‘e and the loser of the Tuesday playoff.
Playoffs started for the Under 12 Girls division last Thursday when Lihu‘e (Caires 1) edged Waimea, 1-0, and Lihu‘e (Caires 2) advanced with a 1-0 win over Koloa.
Caires 2 then edged out Caires 1 with a 2-1 win, Saturday to advance to the championship game scheduled for 4 p.m., Oct. 26 at Hanapepe Stadium.
Waimea went up against Koloa and following a 2-1 win, Thursday, advanced in the playoffs, then beating Kalaheo, 3-1, Saturday to set up a showdown against Caires 1, Wednesday in Waimea.
The winner of that matchup will face Caires 2 for the U12G championship.
Lihu‘e (Ijima) is in the championship game for the Under 14 Girls division after opening with a 6-0 win over Waimea last Wednesday and advancing to the title game with a 1-0 edge over Koloa, Saturday.
Koloa, a 3-0 winner over Lihu‘e (Curtis) last Wednesday, played a rematch against Lihu‘e (Curtis), Wednesday after Lihu‘e (Curtis) advanced with a 3-0 win over Waimea, Saturday.
The winner of the Koloa/Lihu‘e (Curtis) match will advance to the championship against Lihu‘e (Ijima), Oct. 28 starting at 4 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
