LIHU‘E —Kaua‘i High School bowling teams added icing to their Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling by sweeping both the boys and girls matches, Thursday.
The Red Raider boys finished the season undefeated with a 2,178 pinfall and the Red Raider girls stayed ahead of the Kapa‘a challenge with a 1,952 pinfall, just 14 pins ahead of Kapa‘a’s 1,938 pinfall.
Kapa‘a boys finished with a 2,082 pinfall, followed by Waimea with a 1,885 pinfall, anchored by Chase Ueno, the top boys individualist, netting his best game at 152 in Game 1.
That is below his average of 182.22 over nine games.
Overall, Kaua‘i boys finished the season with six points.
Kaua‘i’s Tevin Nakashima, holding the No. 2 berth in the boys’ individual standings, is averaging 179.11 over nine games, and on Thursday, rolled a 172, his day’s best, in Game 3.
Randy Iloreta Jr. holds the No. 3 berth in the boys’ individual standings with a 178.78 average over nine games, and on Thursday, was right on the money with a 172-157-175 series to lead the Warriors.
Following Iloreta in the boys’ individuals, John Quisel of Kaua‘i (165.33), Justin Uegawa of Kapa‘a (164.67), Kyle Balisacan of Kaua‘i (158.78), Ammon Ho‘opi‘i-Akau of Kaua‘i (150.00), and Elson Tanimoto of Kaua‘i (147.44) round out the leaderboard.
Darcie Vea, the Kaua‘i girls’ top roller, sat out Thursday’s match to let others work on their averages. Vea leads the girls’ individual standings with a 171.56 average over nine games.
The No. 2 in the individual standings, Joanna Chang of Kapa‘a, was disappointed with her Thursday outing, noting that she wasn’t on her game and failed to meet her average of 169.00 over nine games. She finished the day with rolls of 137, 135, and 150.
Reggie McCabe, seventh in the girls’ individual standings with a 152.11 average over nine games, surpassed her numbers with a 148-145-170 performance.
Similarly, Warrior roller Angelika Questin, fourth in the individual standings with a 162.33 average over nine games, finished Thursday with rolls of 128, 163, and 132.
Waimea’s Bronte Acosta, juggling her schedule between cheerleading practice and the KIF bowling season, sits at fifth in the individual standings with a 155.44.
With just minutes to spare before the start of the Thursday round, Acosta finished with rolls of 140, 113, and 97.
Alyssa Jardin of Waimea, sitting with a 139.11 average over nine games, came up with a strong 129-141-149 performance.
Similarly, Kimberly Hoeckman-Percival, with a 127.00 average over nine games, rolled a 117, 107, and 149.
Kaua‘i’s Dyann Layaoen, rolling in the absence of Vea and just two games from Kelsey Cadiente, used the Thursday game (135-117-166) to improve her average to 133.33 over nine games.
Cadiente currently sits third in the individual standings with a 164.78 average and finished Thursday with rolls of 148 and 134.
The KIF will be hosting the Billy Tees Boys and Girls 2010 State Bowling Championships at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center on Oct. 28-29.
