PO‘IPU — Herb Noe won more than the Men’s A Division title, Sunday at the Fall Challenge Tennis Tournament.
Carolyn Lum, teaming with Kirstie Kashima, and dropping to the team of Heidi Read and Elena deMille in the finals of the Women’s C, said both Herb and Krystyna Noe were honored for spearheading the charity tournaments during the USTA banquet on O‘ahu where Sarah Kukino was honored as one of two 2010 Muriel Osborne Hawai‘i Tennis Award recipients.
Lum said Kukino was also honored as a recipient of the Sportsmanship award at the banquet.
Read and deMille controlled the finals of the Women’s C Division, topping the team of Lum and Kashima, 6-4, 6-4.
Kukino, partnering with Lani Rae Green, ended taking the Women’s A Division, 6-4, 7-6 over the efforts of Jennifer Hreljac and Tammie Quinlan.
Judy Honda and Vivian Kutaka edged past the team of Beverly Coursey and Mari Anderson, 7-5, 6-4 to take the Women’s B Division, the Honda/Kutaka pair edging out Maricel Muraoka and Ginger Allen, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0(10-3) in the semifinals to meet Coursey and Anderson.
Coursey and Anderson got past the pair of Rosemary Smythe and Michelle Fitzgerald, 6-4, 7-6 to advance to the finals of that division.
In the Men’s C Division, Jim Flipert and John Bartelt got past the duo of Pat Erwin and Gary Lenoft, 6-4, 7-6.
Bino Fitzgerald teamed with Adam Hadley to edge out Jim Anderson and Calvin Lalin, 7-5, 7-6 for the Men’s B Division, the match drawing the attention of spectators who kept an eye on both the Men’s B and Men’s A finals that was taking place just across the sidewalk at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
Herb Noe teamed with Chaz Okamoto, coming off last week’s Kaua‘i Fall Junior Open tournament, to finally nail the division with a tight 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) outing against the team of Koko Chang and Darron White.
Interrupted by the wind playing havoc with one of the tents, Herb and Chaz earned the spot in the finals by getting past Roy Yokotake, sporting a wooden tennis racquet of the 1960s vintage, and Bernie Duarte, 7-6, 6-2 in the semifinals. Chang and White advanced to the finals after defeating the pair of Brant Fuchigami and Kevin Konishi, 6-1, 6-3 in the semis.
Krystyna Noe said proceeds from Sunday’s charity doubles tournament go toward the Kaua‘i United Way.
She said the last charity tournament for this year will be played Dec. 11-12 at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts and proceeds will benefit the Toys for Tots program being coordinated locally by the Marine Corps League, Kaua‘i Detachment.
Krystyna said the charity tournaments are made possible through the support of major sponsors, the Po‘ipu Kai Association and the Kaua‘i Tennis Association.
“Participation is very important toward the success and longevity of these tournaments,” the organizers state in its website. “A big mahalo to everyone, from as far as O‘ahu and Princeville, to everyone who came out and joined in to make the weekend fun.”
