KALAHEO — Brianna Griep of the Koloa Green Flash finished with a hat trick in her team’s 3-0 win over the Lihu‘e Dynamite, Wednesday at the Kalawai Park.
Griep, playing in the Girls Under 14 age group, broke a 0-0 halftime deadlock with a quick goal in the third period, the ball rolling just past the outstretched Dynamite goalkeeper.
That goal was quickly followed by a second breakaway play, Griep sweeping in from the right wing on a shot from about 20 yards out.
Whitney Summerhays got the assist on Griep’s final shot that ended the game when Summerhays, the left forward, picked up a Kiki Pagador breakaway from the left wing and drove the ball for a shot-on-goal just outside the goalbox.
The Dynamite goalkeeper stopped the ball, but in the bobble, Griep swept in from the right to slam the rebound into the net.
With the win, the Koloa Green Flash advance to the Saturday match against the winner of the Lihu‘e-Ijima/Waimea game that was taking place in Lihu‘e.
The Saturday winner will advance to the title game, Oct. 28 at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 4 p.m.
Despite the loss, the Lihu‘e Dynamite has an opportunity to advance, meeting the loser of the Lihu‘e-Ijima/Waimea match, Saturday at 3 p.m. at the home of either Lihu‘e or Waimea.
Wednesday was the second day of the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 940 playoffs for the Under 12 and Under 14 teams.
On Tuesday, the Under 12 Girls started its playoffs in Waimea and Kalawai. Wednesday was the Under 14 Girls at fields in Lihu‘e and Kalawai.
The Under 12 and Under 14 Girls division continues on Saturday.
On Oct. 19, the Under 12 Boys start its playoffs, Hanapepe hosting the winner of the Lihu‘e/Kalaheo match that will be played Saturday in Lihu‘e starting at 1:30 p.m.
The playoffs continue with Under 14 Girls playing Oct. 20, and the Under 12 Boys and Under 14 Boys playing on Oct. 21 at locations to be determined.
Oct. 23 is reserved for the AYSO, Region 940 SoccerFest with the championship games starting Oct. 25 when the Under 12 Boys will determine its region winner.
Oct. 26 is the title game for the Under 12 Girls. The Under 14 Boys will battle for its title on Oct. 27, and the Under 14 Girls take the field on Oct. 28 for its division championship.
The season wraps up on Oct. 30 for the Friendship Games.
