LIHU‘E — Wailua’s Malia Manuel is into the quarterfinals at the Oakley World Pro Junior in Bali, after a 17.90 to 16.16 victory over Pauline Ado in the competition’s third round, Monday.
Manuel, 17, will take on American Sage Erickson in the opening quarterfinal heat when the women’s event resumes.
Kaua‘i’s Leila Hurst also reached the third round of the event, but was eliminated in her head-to-head heat by France’s Alizee Arnaud.
Alessa Quizon was the third Hawai‘i surfer remaining in the women’s event, but was knocked out in the final heat of the third round, 16.67 to 12.50, by Australia’s Tyler Wright.
Manuel won her opening-round heat with an 11.16 total, besting the point totals of Felicity Palmateer (10.34) and Bianca Buitendag (9.27).
Hurst moved into the second round after putting up a 14.20 score in the first round, but still coming in third in her heat as Wright (18.24) and Diana Cristina (15.23) each topped her total.
She moved into the third round with a 14.83 in the second round, good for second in her heat.
Quizon was second in her opening-round heat, though she tied Sage Erickson with 12.10 points to advance directly to the third round.
Tyler Newton and Alex Smith have each reached the fourth round of the men’s event, giving Kaua‘i two of the final 16 surfers remaining.
Hawai‘i’s Kiron Jabour and Granger Larsen also advanced out of Tuesday’s third round.
Kaimana Jaquias was eliminated in the third round by American talent Nat Young.
Newton narrowly outpointed South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries, 16.67 to 16.13, in his third-round victory.
Smith was able to outmaneuver Brendon Gibbens, also from South Africa, 11.43 to 9.80.
Newton will now take on Young in the fourth round’s opening heat, while Smith and Jabour will go up against one another in the sixth heat for a spot in the quarters.
Surfers who have qualified for this year’s ASP World Junior Tour are battling the globe’s finest under-21 talent for the prestigious title of ASP World Junior Champion on the two-event series, which culminates in Australia in early January, 2011.
