Koloa’s Alika Ventura played both sides of the ball to lead the Junior PeeWee team to a 12-6 edge over the hosting Hanapepe Colts, Sunday at Hanapepe Stadium.
That win pulled Koloa into a 2-1 record in the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League standings, tying Kapa‘a Eagles who took a 31-13 win over Kekaha, Saturday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium. Both teams end the week with three points in the standings.
The Koloa JPW win over Hanapepe gives the Colts its first season loss for a 3-1 record, but still in the lead with six points in the standings.
John Levinthol marked three touchdowns and Brooks Bethel added a late-game score to lead the Junior Midget Kapa‘a Eagles to a 29-0 win over Kekaha in the Saturday nightcap.
That win brings the JM EAgles to a 3-1 record, tying the Lihu‘e Patriots who enjoyed a bye week. Both teams have six points apiece in the standings.
The Kekaha loss drops it to a 1-2 record, tying the Koloa JM who got a single first quarter score in its 7-0 edge over Hanapepe Colts, in the Sunday nightcap.
Both teams have a 1-2 record in a tie for second place with two points apiece.
The Hanapepe Colts JM drop to 0-4.
Kaiona Nakamura-Makanani opened the scorebooks early, running back an interception 15 yards for touchdown in a game filled with scoring throughout.
Just about two minutes later, Cade Halemanu engineered a pass to Leslee Aki for a 34-yard touchdown connection with 6:30 still showing in the first quarter.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Brenton Garcia found paydirt on a 23-yard run with Keona Nakamura-Makanani running in the point-after for the 19-0 bulge.
That was answered with 3:41 showing in the half when Tinoa Albina punched through for a seven-yard TD and graced the score on the PAT run for the 19-7 halftime deficit.
Halemanu, on a keeper play in the third period, pushed through four yards to the end zone for the 25-7 lead with 6:25 remaining in the quarter.
A little more than a minute into the final period, Kapa‘a Eagles struck again, this time Keona Nakamura-Makanani taking the ball on a nine-yard romp to paydirt for the 31-7 reading.
But Kekaha had one more shot, breaking through on a trick play from Pelenalako Kamala to Albina to Po‘okela Bartels for a seven-yard aerial show with 2:28 remaining in the game for the 31-13 final.
The Kapa‘a Eagles JM completed the Saturday sweep when Levinthol peeled off scoring runs of 48 and 51 yards in the first period with Braxton Garcia booting both PATs for the 16-0 read.
Levinthol’s third score came with 6:32 showing in the half on a 47-yard run for the 22-0 halftime lead.
Bethel added the final Kapa‘a score with 1:03 remaining in the game when he found the end zone following a 70-yard run, Nainoa Soto putting the icing on the 29-0 win with a point-after run.
Ventura, putting the Koloa JPW on the board with a 74-yard kickoff return for touchdown, recovered a fumble and returned it 44 yards to break a 6-6 deadlock with less than 15 seconds peeled off the third period.
Kahekili Kelekoma answered Ventura’s kickoff return with a three-yard charge to the end zone to knot the contest 6-6.
Kekaha hosts Koloa in the Saturday double-header at Hanapepe Stadium before Kapa‘a hosts Lihu‘e in three games, Sunday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium.
The JPW kick off at 8 a.m., Saturday followed by the JM game starting at 10 a.m.
On Sunday, the Mitey Mites get things rolling at 11:30 a.m. followed by the JPW match at 1:30 p.m. and the JM game starting at 3:30 p.m.
