Regardless of how long you’ve lived here or how many times you’ve visited, there are likely still plenty places to experience on Kaua‘i for the first time. Sometimes all it takes is a concerted effort to put yourself out there.
Regardless of how long you’ve lived here or how many times you’ve visited, there are likely still plenty places to experience on Kaua‘i for the first time. Sometimes all it takes is a concerted effort to put yourself out there.
The last few weekends have afforded me a healthy dose of new sights and sounds, tastes and smells that are now etched in my mind’s trophy case of amazing memories. From the treasured vista of Na Pali Coast at the end of Awa‘awapuhi Trail in Koke‘e to the black volcanic rock formations at the semi-secluded Turtle Cove in Princeville, a little spirit of adventure goes a long way.
Sometimes the most incredible things have been right in front of you the whole time. You just have to open your eyes to see them.
Setting the outdoorsy delights aside, some culinary treats have also somehow escaped me until this month. Most recent on that list is Nanea at the Westin.
I suppose it’s a product of living here that causes me to not really consider hotels or resorts as places to dine out, but apparently I’ve been missing out on some sweet spots.
Nanea’s liliko‘i mojitos alone make the trip worthwhile. Add to that their delectable risotto and their prosciutto-wrapped scallops on a bed of gourmet mashed potatoes with cooked spinach in between and you’ve got yourself a reason to keep coming back (not to mention the romantic atmosphere created by Mother Nature painting the sky all kinds of pinks and oranges for you to enjoy from their open-air seating).
Granted, I may have given their wonderful wait staff a moment for pause after accidentally eating a loaf’s worth of the bread they bring out before your meal. But maybe they didn’t notice my apparent need to replenish a month’s worth of carbohydrates in a single sitting.
If the marathon would’ve been the following weekend instead of the previous, perhaps I could’ve played it off like I was just another carb-loading runner. Oh well. I’ll try to control myself better next time (I’m not even going to get into the guilt-ridden facts about what I did to the butter dish. I’ll just say this is why I don’t keep stuff like that around the house; moderation is not my middle name).
And so it goes.
This week’s edition of Kaua‘i Times brings us the skinny on Rock Candy, an (almost) all-female band that will bring you to your knees. The group rocked out recently at Trees Lounge and our correspondent Amanda Gregg met up with them. Her story starts on page 3.
