Starting this Saturday, the remaining Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football games’ starting times have been revised.
Saturday’s KIF junior varsity game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. instead of the originally-scheduled 1 p.m., when Kaua‘i hosts Kapa‘a at Vidinha Stadium.
This revised start time also affects the varsity contest, which will now start approximately 40 minutes after the completion of the JV game, but not later than 3 p.m.
The schedule revision was done in partnership with the County of Kaua‘i and the KIF and made possible due to a memorandum of plea agreement between the County and the Department of Justice that was filed in federal court two weeks ago, states a release from the KIF.
According to the release, the agreement allows for five KIF varsity football games in the 2010 season to be played in late afternoon/night hours with a full moon during the Newell’s Shearwater fledgling season, if the county fulfills certain conditions.
The Newell’s Shearwater fledgling season runs from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15.
The agreement also requires the county to establish an escrow account of $60,000 by Nov. 1 to be used in the event that deaths or serious injury of seabirds occur.
For each bird killed or injured, $10,000 will be transferred from the county’s escrow account to a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation account for use in mitigating takings of seabirds on Kaua‘i.
Due to limited scheduling notice and concern for the safety and welfare of its students, the KIF has decided to reschedule three of the five allowable late afternoon varsity games under the terms of this agreement.
“We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the county as this agreement makes it possible for the KIF to reschedule kickoff times for three games later in the day,” said William Arakaki, the Kaua‘i Complex Area Superintendant. “The measures taken by the county demonstrate a clear commitment to finding the best alternatives for all concerned.
In addition to Saturday’s game at Vidinha Stadium, the games scheduled for Oct. 9 when Waimea hosts Kaua‘i at Hanapepe Stadium and Oct. 30 when Kaua‘i hosts Waimea at Vidinha Stadium will have the JV games start at 12:30 p.m. and the varsity games start approximately 40 minutes after the completion of the JV games, but no later than 3 p.m.
Games on Oct. 2 when Kapa‘a hosts Waimea at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium, Oct. 16 when Kapa‘a hosts Kaua‘i at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium and Oct. 23 when Waimea hosts Kapa‘a at Hanapepe Stadium will have the JV games start at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity games starting at least 30 minutes prior to sunset, or about 4:30 p.m.
During these games, the stadium lights will be turned on at twilight and off an hour after the games end.
