Our ‘Janus-faced’ president
In response to Mr. Thorp’s “Reality-based Obama” letter: It’s no wonder our Country is in such a mess with such unilateral and illusionary rhetoric. I assume Mr. Thorp is getting all his “news from” our “leftist focusing, selective reporting media” encouraging: the expansion of Fanny Mae and Fanny Mac sub-prime mortgages programs supported by Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama (2 democrats and 1 Republican) under the leadership of Barney Frank and Mitch McConnell (1 Democrat and 1 Republican). That’s more Democrats than Republicans that got us into this mess.
As for “big government” regulating the “finance industry,” now we can anticipate another meltdown sooner since there are now more Democrat millionaires in the Congress than Republicans. Now the banks won’t lend money to create jobs. Good work Democrats and Republicans!
How about that 2,800-page “real health care reform” bill shoved down our throats, Democrats? The bill that had to be passed in the dark of the night so “We the People” could read it to see what was in it, so House leader Pelosi (Democrat) stated.
As for seeing the “last combat troops leave Iraq,” where did they go? Home? I think not; more like Kuwait or Afghanistan. How many boots have returned to U.S. soil? That’s Obama’s policy!
“Renewed respect for America” with our president bowing to every other world leader? You don’t get respect by kowtowing to your equals or your enemies.
Obama’s only focusing on the “fight against global terrorism” appears to be abandoning the securing of our southern border; give terrorist and aliens legal rights that are reserved in the Constitution only for citizens of the United States of America; never mentioning the word “terrorist”; and treating Muslims better than Jews and Christians.
If you want to “keep breathing fresh air,” how about dealing with the one issue that, like Obama, Mr. Thorp seems to have forgotten about: creating jobs for the 9.6 percent (10 percent if you round it off) unemployed which was promised not to rise above 8 percent.
I agree with Mr. Thorp on one issue: “Stand up for truth, justice, real freedom and human progress.” I do differ with his voting suggestion: Do not vote “Democrat.” Watch the leftist “propaganda machine” media and Fox News; weigh the reports objectively; and then vote intelligently and vote out those that are not acting in the best interest of your family, country or your children’s futures. “Just say no to” the stupidity of voting for a “D” or for an “R.” Vote for a positive future for America — not for a party.

Time will tell
The Garden Island’s Richard Stein did an excellent straw poll vote for our two mayoral candidates, Bernard Carvalho and Diana LaBedz
Though this was not a scientific poll, the results were quite amazing. Of the 766 people who voted, 57 percent voted for Bernard and 43 percent voted for Diana. Ordinarily a 13 percent differential might look huge but let’s examine the facts.
The Mayor has the bully pulpit, is pictured almost daily in the paper, has his TV show on Ho’ike, commands a huge war chest, has signs saturating our Island, and was born on Kaua‘i.
Diana on the other hand is relatively unknown but is extremely intelligent and dedicated (who else had the guts to go up against the Carvalho machine?) and is running a shoe-string campaign. Thus, considering the gigantic advantage Bernard has going for him, this “dark horse” or Sea Biscuit (if you remember the horse) just might have a chance of winning this race.
Maybe the public is fed up with business as usual and truly wants a change — we’ll soon see, won’t we?

Appreciate truck drivers
Give a special “thank you” to our truck drivers and let them know how important they are to us for all of their hard work and commitment in one of our economy’s most demanding and important jobs.
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is Sept. 19 through Sept. 25.
Remember, do a good deed, wave that waiting truck driver into the flow of traffic ahead of you and do not turn into traffic in front of an approaching truck, they cannot slow down like a car. Keep everyone safe!

Dear DLNR
This is my letter of mahalo, late, but better late then never, for Francis “Bully” Mission and all his crew for the 1st Kalalau goat eradication this year in which my family had the privilege of participating.
They have done an excellent job in checking and clearing the way for safe hunting there for our family of hunters, especially for my husband who has always been an avid hunter all his life now with medical problems still accompany my son on those trips.
Mahalo for all you and your crew did to make things comfortable and less worrisome for me while they were there. High recommendations should be given to you and your department for a job well done.
