Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani, under the direction of kumu hula Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza, finished third at the annual Hula Oni E competition held over the weekend at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on O‘ahu.
Based in Hanapepe, more than a hundred family and friends made the trip to support the 21 dancers who participated in the weekend competition.
Madison Torres-Lopez was the halau’s entrant as a Kaikamahine soloist, her auana presentation of “E Huli Ho‘i Mai” pleasing the crowd with its fun and entertaining performance.
Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani finished third in both the kahiko and auana performances.
The dancers have been practicing since January and their hard work paid off with the third place finishes, states a release from the halau.
Halau Na Mamo‘o Pu‘uanahulu under the direction of kumu hula Sonny Ching picked up top honors for both kahiko and auana with kumu hula Tracie and Keawe Lopes leading Halau Ka La ‘Onohi Mai O Ha‘eha‘e to second place in both categories.
