KEKAHA — Community members have been voicing their concerns over the reactivation of a shrimp farm in Kekaha, which is seeking a permit to discharge up to 30 million gallons a day of wastewater into the ocean.
George Chamberlain, director of operations at Integrated Aquaculture, conducted a meeting and a field trip Thursday at the Westside farm for 12 hand-picked members of the community, which raised even more concerns from residents.
Chamberlain assured the group that the company is striving to keep the environment clean, and is going to great lengths to discharge the cleanest water possible.
Company officials are also investing on algae, oysters, clams, moi and kohala as ways to diversify the farming and create a sustainable business with low waste.
