LIHU‘E — Their lone meeting took place more than 85 years ago.
The Warriors haven’t been away from home for quite that long, but the University of Hawai‘i football team will conclude its relatively lengthy 13-day road trip against Colorado, Saturday.
Since a 13-0 UH win on New Year’s Day in 1925, Hawai‘i and Colorado have not faced one another.
Each team comes into this weekend’s game 1-1 after UH rallied to knock off Army, 31-28, on Saturday in West Point, N.Y.
Quarterback Bryant Moniz was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts, throwing for 343 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over.
He connected with wide receiver Royce Pollard on back-to-back plays with under a minute to play in the 28-28 game, setting up a Scott Enos field goal with seven seconds on the clock.
Following the win, UH remained on the Mainland in Las Vegas and will have covered 11,184 miles and eight cities on its return to O‘ahu.
It is scheduled to leave Las Vegas for Denver on Friday.
Colorado fell to 1-1 after getting thumped on the road by California, 52-7.
The Buffaloes opened the season with a rivalry win at home over Colorado State, 24-3.
The Warriors hold a 2-12-1 record all-time against the teams that make up today’s Big 12 conference, though none of those games have occurred since a 1978 loss to Nebraska.
Offensively, UH is currently one of the top-ranked teams in the nation through two weeks, sitting second in passing offense at 401.0 yards per game.
Having missed more than a quarter of action against USC in the opener, Moniz has still thrown for 612 yards and four touchdowns to this point.
Wide receiver Greg Salas has 15 receptions for 187 yards, while Kealoha Pilares has scored four touchdowns, grabbing 11 passes for 280 yards.
Pollard has 12 catches for 200 yards and one score, while Rodney Bradley has 10 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.
The Buffaloes had trouble stopping the Cal offense, though it was more the turnovers that put them behind the eight ball. Colorado turned it over five times — two fumbles and three interceptions — while not forcing any Cal miscues.
They gave up 197 yards passing and 159 yards rushing, while compiling just 239 total yards of their own.
Colorado running back Rodney Stewart has gotten 45 carries in the Buffaloes’ two games for 145 yards (3.2 YPC). He should see plenty of work again Saturday, with UH giving up 496 yards on the ground in its first two contests.
Kick off is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Hawaiian (1:30 p.m. local) with TV coverage on Fox College Sports and radio coverage on ESPN 1420 AM.
