The University of Hawai‘i women’s golf team opens the 2010-11 season by competing in the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
This year’s field consists of 17 teams. The Rainbow Wahine will be competing alongside No. 20 and host New Mexico, Brigham Young, Colorado, Colorado State, No. 16 Denver, Georgia State, Indiana, Northwestern, No. 24 Ohio State, Oregon, San Diego State, No. 26 TCU, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UNLV and Wyoming.
Teams will play a total of 54 holes — 36 on Friday and the final 18 on Saturday — on a par-73 course checking in at 6,187 yards.
It has been two years since UH has competed in the Dick McGuire Invitational. In 2008, the Rainbow Wahine earned 16th place with a 950 total (314-312-324). The top individual finisher was former Rainbow Wahine Corie Hou, who tied for 26th place at 8-over par.
Participating in this year’s tournament will be sophomore Ka‘ili Britos, coming off an impressive freshman season where she received the 2010 WAC Freshman of the Year award and was selected to the 2009-10 Division I National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.
Also competing will be UH returnees, sophomore Brigitte Baker and senior Brittany Bomar. Making their debuts in collegiate golf will be freshman Charlee Kapiioho, a standout from ‘Iolani High School, and freshman Madeleine Ystrom who hails from Haninge, Sweden.
