LIHU‘E — Honolulu resident Robert Lower Jr., 29, died Friday after apparently suffering decompression sickness while scuba diving off Kaua‘i, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office and county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.
The call came in from Kukui‘ula Harbor around 2:45 p.m., Friday. Lower was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and later to Kuakini Medical Center on O‘ahu where he died around 11:05 p.m., authorities said.
Decompression sickness — also known as divers’ disease or the bends — stems from dissolved gases coming out of solution and forming bubbles in the blood on depressurisation, according to online sources.
