Get an airport physical
Wikipedia states the same type of radiation used in medical diagnostic imaging, such as CT scans, MRIs and x-rays is used in the new state-of-the-art, full-body scanners employed at many airports including Hawai‘i’s own Lihu‘e Airport.
For those who cannot afford health insurance, buy a cheap flight and go through the airport full body scanner, ask them if they see any polyps in your colon, or ask them at security if it’s scar tissue on your lung or a cancerous tumor.
Although these full body scanners may cause some embarrassment, it sure beats the average cost of a spinal MRI at $2,500. So if your back is killing you and you can’t afford the MRI, or your insurance won’t pay for it, just thank Uncle Sam and the war on terror for providing free medical imaging for one and all.
To be on the safe side it’s always best to travel with a doctor or radiologist friend in case there’s a question of your full body scan diagnosis.
No worries, let your next physical be at your local airport.

Vote for Diana for mayor
Diana is more than a pretty face. She has taken a strong position against the mono-crop growing of GMO (genetically modified organism). Pesticide sprays that are used in GMO food production are harmful to people. In addition the chemical fertilizers used do long-term harm to the soil and end up polluting our drinking water, the oceans and marine life.
GMO corn seed farming on our agricultural land doesn’t make us more sustainable. All that corn growing in the fields and no corn to eat. That’s why Diana would promote the county adopting policies that encourage farming of organic varied crops that are healthy, nutritious, delicious and local!
Diana’s position to extend the use of the bus system to weekends and evenings is one of increasing our sustainability, relieving us the burden of having to maintain a car to commute, reducing traffic and carbon dioxide emissions.
Vote for a healthier life here on Kaua‘i by voting for Diana LaBedz for mayor.

Impressed with Carvalho
Aloha. My wife works as a clerk at a small feed store. About a year ago she received a phone call from a man who asked if he could get a rain check on a sale item. It was the last day of the sale and he was pressed for time. She explained that she could not because it was in stock. He made the time and came into the store to purchase it. Another customer greeted him as Mayor Carvalho. This customer inquired as to why he was there and when he told her she said “why you not say that you’re the mayor.” And he said something to the effect that he would never use his position of authority for personal gain. I believe a person’s character speaks volumes. Aloha.

Hooser an excellent candidate for LG
Yes, Rich Hoeppner, I agree with you 100 percent that the people of Kaua‘i should vote for Gary Hooser to be our next lieutenant governor (“Objects to ‘untrue’ letter,” Letters, Sept. 4).
Though Allie Valverde’s letter “Hooser didn’t pay taxes” was factually correct, it was very inappropriate to try and denigrate a man for a minor 15-year-old tax infraction (a mistake that was completely settled at the time) when this man has dedicated his entire political life towards helping and representing the people who elected him.
Particularly, as Rich pointed out, his being the champion of the people on Kaua‘i to keep the Superferry from coming here without first getting an EIS as the Supreme Court ruled.
When Gary was a member of our County Council, he always had the fortitude to vote for or against an issue depending on whether or not it was beneficial to his constituents. He didn’t care if it were a 6-to-1 or a 1-to-6 vote, he voted his conscience. And I never heard him vote for or against an issue “with reservations” — he didn’t sit on the fence but took a stance.
And no elected official that I have known in my 21 years on Kaua‘i has ever been more accessible or easier to contact than Gary Hooser — a huge plus in the political maze of today!
While on the council and in the Senate, his representation of the people has been outstanding and he would do the same job as our Lt. Governor.

It is good to see The Garden Island promoting voter education (Sept. 5, A1 and A6).
In addition to reading your local newspaper, candidate information for the Sept. 18 primary election can be found at http://www.lwv-hawaii.com/candidates.htm
When the State Office of Elections which formerly posted this information on its website but discontinued the service citing budgetary constraints, the League of Women Voters in Hawai‘i volunteered their website and time.
To continue receiving voter information, please support the LWV in Hawai‘i as well as your local news.
