Kukui‘ula Shopping Village invites the people of Kaua‘i to join its volunteers in the “Mile of Smiles,” Sunday morning at the Kaua‘i Marathon.
Veronica Lovesy, senior marketing manager of Kukui‘ula Village, said they got the idea after asking runners what they would like to see, or receive from an aid station.
“We have lots of parking at the Village and will provide a few benches on the Kukui‘ula bypass road for people to come and cheer on the runners and walkers,” Lovesy said in an e-mail. “People can also bring their comfortable chairs, and we will even provide some Hawaiian pom poms, or shredded ti leaves.”
Lovesy said the runners should be passing Kukui‘ula Village between 7:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. and people are invited to join the fun in helping cheer.
Lappert’s Ice Cream and Coffee is creating a special Heart Berry Ono smoothie to provide runners an extra boost. Kukui‘ula Shopping Village is not an official aid station, Lovesy said, but we would like to create a “Mile of Smiles” along the bypass road to help cheer on all of the marathon participants as they close in on their final mile.
People interested in becoming part of the “Mile of Smiles” are asked to heed the traffic advisories and take Koloa Road to the roundabout to the Village parking lot.
