LIHU‘E — Jaycee Pang worked on a bag during the summer and entered it in the 2010 Home Economics competition when the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair opened Thursday.
Little did she know that summer project would earn her the coveted Best in Show rosette as the bag was selected tops in the Junior Division, Machine Sewn Items category.
Pang was one of eight Best in Show award winners in the Junior and Senior divisions for different areas of judging.
MacKenzie Fugeli designed a resort using Legos to win the Best in Show award in the Special Junior Lego contest which this year drew more than 20 entries from youngsters throughout the island.
First-time entrants Jonah and Sophia Stein were thrilled their respective houses earned red ribbons in that competition, not expecting to get past the consideration phase.
Similarly, Kaihalana Locey, 12, of Anahola was excited about the red ribbon she earned for her Amy Butler bag project and a third place for a pillow project she worked on during the summer.
Gailee Montgomery topped the Machine Sewn Group for the Senior division, earning a Best in Show award. Carolyn Dotario topped the Needlework Group in the Senior division with Laurie Buller getting the Best in Show in the Arts and Crafts Group.
Marti McHenry is ready for the holidays with her Best in Show for the Special Christmas Decor contest, and Jake Reilly recycled an abandoned piano to get Best in Show in the Special Recycled Arts and Crafts contest.
Meagan Rice earned the Best in Show for this year’s special ingredient contest using macadamia nuts.
The show stoppers will be on display at the Home Economics area of the fair until this afternoon when the exhibits and displays begin breaking down.
