Construction of the first Hazmat-dedicated fire station on Kaua‘i, called Kaikea, located by Kealia’s Scenic Point, is seen here Friday. The station was supposed to be done early next year, but the county moved the anticipated opening up to next Wednesday. The location of the station had generated some controversy. It’s out of the designated flood zone, but some argued that a tsunami could still flood it. Berms built around Kaikea supposedly would protect the station if it is hit by a tsunami, said a high-ranked Kaua‘i Fire Department officer who asked not to be identified.
