PO‘IPU — Sandra Akita earned three first place finishes to be named All Around Cowgirl at the final 2010 Kaua‘i All-Girls Rodeo Association event last week.
Akita, who opened with a second-place finish to Britni Ludington-Braun in the 3D Barrels event, rebounded with Shantel Wong to top the Team Roping event on a 29.49 average on two go’s.
She continued her strong showing with a first finish in the 1st D of the 3D Pole Bending on a 22.702 go over Taylor Ludington’s 23.11 challenge.
In the Steer Undecorating, Akita was quick out of the gate, logging a 5.03 go for first place in that competition over the challenge from Summer Malina (7.62) and Kim Medeiros (7.91).
She also finished fourth in the Breakaway Roping event with a 20.54 go compared with the speedy 9.04 showing from Kelli Carveiro who topped the event.
Akita closed the day with a fifth finish in the Goat Tying event, but tallied 52 points for the All-Around Cowgirl title.
Coralyn Murayama, teaming with Joyce Miranda for second place in the Team Roping at 12.74, finished the day with 38 points for Reserve All-Around Cowgirl honors.
Murayama’s sole top honor came in the Goat Tying where she stopped the clock on a 32.995 go over the 33.882 posted by Kira Pimental, second place finisher.
Murayama also tallied third in the 1st D of 3D Pole Bending on a 23.948 go and fifth in the Steer Undecorating with a 16.94 go.
The final results puts Akita in a nice position for overall cowgirl honors with 227 points accumulated over the earlier five KAGRA rodeos before the final event got underway.
This includes three overall first finishes in the Steer Undecorating with 45 points, the Breakaway Roping with 38 points and accumulating 55 points towards being named Top Header.
Challenging her in this category is Rhonda Kaui, taking the honor last year, with 53 points showing on the tally list posted with the events listing.
Ludington-Braun showed 147 points in second place below Akita, her strong showing in the 3D Barrels giving her 48 points to Akita’s 34 points.
Corinna Vasconcelles of the KAGRA said final points will be tallied and audited before final announcements for the buckle winners of the season being made.
