KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a junior varsity Warriors set the tone for the second straight week, coming up with another one-sided victory to improve to 2-0, Friday night at the New Kapa‘a Town Park.
Taking on Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, Kapa‘a rolled to a 39-6 win, after a 45-14 victory in its season opener against Kalani High School on Aug. 14.
Each week has been a big JV win, followed by an equally impressive varsity victory.
Having two wins under its belt should prepare Kapa‘a for the upcoming KIF slate of games, which begins on Sept. 4 against Kaua‘i High.
The Warriors got on the board just minutes into the contest when quarterback Daniel Reis broke the pocket and then found an open Justin Nagahisa for a 60-yard touchdown reception. The extra point gave Kapa‘a a 7-0 lead with 9:56 to play in the opening quarter.
The Warriors and Rams traded possessions for the rest of the period, neither squad able to put points on the board.
Kapa‘a added to its lead early in the second, as Reis hit Kalani Kahuanaele with a quick pass, resulting in a five-yard score. The try was true, making it a 14-0 game with 9:52 left in the second.
Shortly before the half, Reis tallied his third TD pass with a six-yard strike to wide receiver Reece Hickse-Whetsel. A missed PAT gave Kapa‘a a 20-0 lead with 3:25 to play in the half.
The Warriors later forced a safety in the Rams’ end zone, before Fresno Masaniai and Edsel Lactaotao each crossed the goal line on the ground in the second half.
Masaniai plunged in from three yards out, Lactaotao scampered for a 29-yard score.
The Warriors nailed a second-half field goal to round out the math, while the defense gave up up a lone Rams touchdown late in the game.
