WAILUA — Thursday was the first time the Kapa‘a Na Koa and the Kaua‘i Bulldog squads were able to scrimmage for a pair of preseason games.
“It’s good they let the teams play each other,” said one mother among the sea of parents that lined the Weinberg Sports Complex in Wailua, pleased with being able to watch the two divisions in action. “The boys are hitting hard, and this gives them a chance to see what they can do before the real game.”
Brad Hiranaka, president of the Kaua‘i Youth Football league, said there are two preseason games lined up for the teams next week.
Tickets for both games are available from any of the players, or by contacting him at 652-9962. Admission is $10 and the game menu calls for a chili dog plate and soft drink.
Kapa‘a Na Koa hosts the West O‘ahu Hammerheads in an Intermediate division matchup, August 27 at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Kaua‘i Bulldogs host Ewa Beach in another Intermediate division game, August 28 at Hanapepe Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Hiranaka said registration for players and cheer squad is still being accepted through the Kaua‘i Youth Football website.
Intermediate division participants must be in grades seven and eight while the Elementary division includes players in grades four through six.
There is no weight limit for the participants in either division and application forms are available online or at the Footlocker store in the Kukui Grove Center, or at Pono Market in Kapa‘a.
Hiranaka also said the KYF program is looking for sponsors to help the league obtain a practice sled to help with the players’ development.
