PO‘IPU — The finals of the Men’s B Doubles was billed as the classic rematch, said Herb Noe, a Men’s A player.
The team of Andrew “Uhu” Sugita and Shawn “Prawn” Morimoto was broken up and they played each other for the finals of the Men’s B Doubles at the Charity Doubles tennis tournament Sunday at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
“They’ve played together for at least five matches and haven’t won a match together,” Noe said. “Now, we’ll see why.”
Sugita teamed with Josh Miyamoto to claim the Men’s B Division, 6-2, 6-2, over Morimoto who teamed with Bino Fitzgerald to emerge as a finalist in that division.
Earlier, Bernie Duarte and Roy Yokotake went three sets to claim the Men’s A Division over the team of Kimo Honda and Ty Okihara, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3), Saturday.
“All of the A Division was settled Saturday because of the draws,” said Krystyna Noe, scorekeeper of the event.
Sinclair Bill and Lani Rae Green topped the duo of Lyndsey Tom and Tammie Quinlan, 6-2, 6-3 to claim the Women’s A division.
Rosemary Smythe and Michelle Fitzgerald went three sets against Shay Orial and Madison Duarte to claim the Women’s B division, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6), and Helen Young and Carol Ito captured the Women’s C division over Paula Nishi and JoAnn DiLeonardo, 6-4, 6-1.
Jerry Green and Anthony Reyes emerged as the Men’s C division winners with a 6-3, 7-5 win over the pair of Rick Randolf and Jim Flipert.
Proceeds from the tournament hosted by the Kaua‘i District Tennis Association and the Po‘ipu Kai Association and Tennis Club go to benefit the Kaua‘i United Way, Krystyna said.
“We would like to thank all the players, volunteers and supporters for coming out to make this tournament a fun and successful event,” Krystyna said.
The next tournament will be played Oct. 9-10 at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
