LIHU‘E — Dancers from around the world will gather today through Aug. 23 at Camp Naue in Ha‘ena to dance the Goddess. The 10-day retreat revolves around the mandala dance, “21 Praises of Tara,” a profound and empowering practice, states a press release.
The Mandala Dance of Tara is choreographed by Maui resident Prema Dasara to one of the most treasured prayers in Tibetan Buddhist practice. The dance has been blessed by many great masters including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who proclaimed the dance “wonderful” and invited Dasara to India with a group of dancers to dance for Tibetan refugees.
Dasara has been bringing the dance to Kaua‘i for over 20 years. Local dancers meet monthly here and are available for blessing ceremonies on Kaua‘i.
Island residents have several options to be included in the ceremonies. At 4 p.m. Aug. 21 residents are invited to witness the dance and then join the dancers. Cost for participation is $7 for the afternoon or $21 including dinner. Dancers are invited to paricipate from 9 to 10 a.m. August 21 in the Mandala of Tara for $108; or for entry into the last three days of the retreat, $315. For those interested in the full 10-day retreat visit taradhatu.org/camp2010.html to register, or call Malia, 332-7447.
