NAWILIWILI — “Ricycling” is not only good for the environment, it helps feed some of Kaua‘i’s hungry residents.
The program, initiated by the leadership at the Banyon Harbor condominiums, was expanded Wednesday when Kelvin Moniz dropped off a load of recyclables at the Reynolds Recycling facility in Nawiliwili.
People with recyclables can now designate proceeds from their loads to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank for the purpose of purchasing food — rice being the preferred commodity — to help feed those in need.
“When people know who’s going to benefit, they are very generous,” said Lyle Otsuka, Banyon Harbor manager. “This way, they’re helping the environment and helping people in need at the same time.”
One hundred percent of the proceeds buys rice, according to KIFB.
Beverage containers with the HI-5 labels are accepted under this program and bottle caps must be removed and labels must be on the container to qualify. Only empty containers will be accepted. The recyclables which will benefit KIFB must be kept separate.
At the time of recycling, the donor needs to notify the Reynolds attendant that these items are for the Ricycle program.
Reynolds Recycling facilities participating in the program include the Nawiliwili facility located next to Honsador Lumber, the Lawai facility behind the post office, and the Kapahi location behind the Menehune Food Mart.
Kelvin Moniz, KIFB operations manager, said KIFB will be hosting its annual Dine Out for Hunger on Aug. 12. During this program, a portion of the diner’s food bill will be used to feed the hungry on Kaua‘i.
Participating restaurants include the Hukilau Lanai, Papaya’s Natural Foods and Cafe in Kapa‘a, Po‘ipu Tropical Burgers in the Po‘ipu Shopping Village, Scotty’s Beachside BBQ, Mark’s Place, Da Booze Shop in Waimea, Genki Sushi, The Grove Cafe at Waimea Brewing Company, Mediterranean Gourmet, Rob’s Good Times Grill, Smiley’s Local Grinds, Tomkats Grille and Postcards Cafe.
