KAPA‘A — The 2010 Heiva I Kaua‘i Ia Orana Tahiti opened to a large crowd, Saturday, at the Kapa‘a Beach Park.
An agenda of solo dance competition — under the music provided by house drummers headed by the Tyrone Temanaha ‘ohana — pulled patrons from the tents where a variety of vendors sold Polynesia-related goods.
Co-sponsored by the Hawai‘i Toursim Authority and Kaua‘i County, the day featured solo competition from dancers ages 4 to 40 in tane, or male, and vahine, or female, divisions.
Iona Teriipaia served as Director of Judges over a field that included Henry Taeza, Camelia Temanaha, Roiti Sylva and Etua Tahauri.
Spectators tasted local-style plate lunches provided by Kaua‘i vendors and they beat the heat by flocking to a shave ice stand.
Gates open at 9 a.m. today with an exhibition performance by Tamatea Nui o Kaua‘i prefacing the group dance competition and drumming.
On the agenda is a coconut-husking and grating contest and an audience Tahitian dance contest for adults and children 12 and under.
Business supporters include Geico, Hilo Hattie’s, the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a, Big Save, Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping, Summers Realty and the Kaua‘i Museum.
