KALAHEO — A pass from Tab Matsumoto to Silas Tacsiat pulled C-Town to within two points of the SupaStars at the 3:23 mark, Tuesday night.
But the effort was premature as the SupaStars surged forward behind four free throws, three coming from Ian Khan, the SupaStars’ high-point man with 32.
Trailing 66-58, C-Town got another bucket on a pass from Tacsiat to Rich Colipano at the 1:56 mark to pull to 66-60, but the effort fell short as Colipano, ending with 14 points for C-Town, bucketed another with less than a minute on the clock only to have SupaStars’ Nathan Smith ice the 71-62 win with a bucket with just 20 seconds showing on the clock.
The SupaStars’ victory keeps them undefeated in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association Men’s 18 and Over summer league.
Despite the loss, C-Town coach Daniel Simao was pleased with the overall performance of his team.
“The boys played good,” Daniel said, following the strong comeback effort. “We were down by 20 points and came back to just two points. That’s really good for the boys.”
Trailing 40-28 at the half, C-Town kept up with the SupaStars in the third quarter and made a move in the final period, outshooting the SupaStars, 20-15 fueled by Matsumoto who posted 12 of his game-total 28 points in the frame.
Rich Colipano got four of his game-total 14 points in the final frame, as did Tacsiat, who posted four of his game-total nine points in the period.
Austin Simao, strong in the paint on defense, got four of his game-total five points in the third period and Olin Claussen netted all four of his points in the second period. A pair from high-school player Cameron Simao came in the third frame to the delight of his mother, who was watching in the stands.
Overall, C-Town got 18 buckets to SupaStars’ 14, but the SupaStars nailed 10 3-pointers — four from Khan — to C-Town’s six.
Big man Nathan Smith launched three from three-point land en route to his game-total 15 points and Ian Clements launched three treys toward his game-total 10 points.
Darin Millard added eight points, David Medeiros got four first-half marks and a second-quarter pair from Travis Ware figured in the win.
Spam Lindsey came up with 21 points to lead Manny’s Sports to a 71-64 win over the Organic Apples in the first of four games played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Following him, Willis Batol finished with 17 points and Manolito Pescador Jr. fired off three treys en route to his game-total 10 points.
Jeremy Robinson fired off five treys and was 9-for-10 at the free-throw line to lead the Organic Apples with 26 points, followed by Randy Vicoy launching three treys en route to his 13 points. Joe Duronslet and Brandon Wong followed with seven and six points, respectively.
James Badua finished with 22 points and Junior Punzalan added 17 points to lead Tropang-L to a 67-61 showing over the Westside Pride, the win being the third straight for Tropang-L.
Ronald Villanueva and Reynante Villanueva each netted 16 points and Gayraud Matias added 15 points to lead the Westside effort.
Clareson Torres bucketed 12 points and Braxton Garma added 10 points, including a pair of treys, to lead the Nite Owls to a 63-42 win over the Bull Horns in the final matchup of the night.
Brothers Kaleo and Kapono Cummings added nine and eight points, respectively, to help the win.
Christian Hudson netted 10 points and Palani Ka‘auwai finished with eight points to lead the Bull Horns’ effort.
