HONOLULU — Gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie this week announced he has accepted invitations from media outlets offering a series of live debates leading up to the Sept. 18 primary election.
Television stations Hawai‘i News Now, KHON, KITV and PBS Hawai‘i have made formal and informal offers for prime time debates. Abercrombie has accepted all the invitations, a news release states.
One station said the Hannemann campaign is attaching conditions that could lead to the cancellation of its event, the release says.
“This election is not about the personalities of politicians. It is about the future of Hawai‘i and the critical issues facing working families,” Abercrombie said. “The people want and deserve forums, discussions, debates and other opportunities to compare the candidates.”
Abercrombie has also accepted invitations to participate in a host of community gubernatorial forums across the state that won’t be televised live. An Aug. 3 debate hosted by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce has been canceled because Hannemann withdrew, the release says.
