HPH launches initiative to transform delivery of care in Hawai‘i
Moving into the public phase of a multi-year strategy, Hawai‘i Pacific Health has begun a statewide initiative designed to achieve a fundamental change in the way health care is delivered in Hawai‘i.
The health system is this month launching a series of community roundtable meetings, a new website and a multi-media campaign to educate the community on “Changing Health Care in Hawai‘i.” The initiative is focused on an innovative model of care that increases quality while slowing the rate of growth in health care costs.
The Changing Health Care in Hawai‘i initiative views the Provider, the Insurer and the Individual as collaborators in health. Three components are central to the initiative’s success:
1) Providers focus on disease prevention, chronic disease management and overall patient wellness;
2) Insurer reimbursements are based on quality and positive outcomes versus the traditional fee-for-service model, which pays providers strictly for the number of visits or services they provide;
3) Individuals take personal responsibility for their health.
To help achieve this, seven years ago Hawai‘i Pacific Health invested in Epic, an EMR system that links its entire network.
EMR adoption has laid the foundation for Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s new HealthAdvantage program. Under this strategic new direction, health care professionals use technology to proactively provide care through a wellness and prevention-based approach that focuses on making sure patients receive all their recommended care.

Oceanit receives recognition
Oceanit has been awarded the Army SBIR Achievement Award for the development of its Hostile Fire Detection System. Each year, the Achievement Award recognizes exceptional Army SBIR (small business innovation research) projects on the basis of originality and innovation, relevance to the Army mission, immediate commercialization potential and overall quality performance. A distinguished panel of Army and industry experts review projects nominated from across the Army and select the best in small business research development. This year, 471 projects were eligible to compete for this award and only 11 were selected.
Oceanit’s HFDS is the world’s fastest hostile fire detection system. Using a novel sensor chip that operates at more than 10,000 frames per second, this next-generation system can be deployed on multiple platforms such as vehicles and aircraft. Developed at Oceanit’s Kauai office, HFDS is based on leading-edge infrared focal plane technology that can detect a gunshot in one-tenth of second, and immediately display on a clock like screen the direction of the gun fire, e.g., fire at 5 o’clock, +10 degree elevation. HFDS provides 360 degree battlespace coverage from a single sensor — with an accuracy of better than ? degree in azimuth and elevation. By using a proprietary weapons detection algorithm, HFDS can detect the difference between an M16, AK47, or a Rocket Propelled Grenade, which would greatly enhance battlefield intelligence and provide real-time information essential to support our ground troops.
Century 21 supports Hawai‘i Foodbank
Century 21 All Islands announced last week they are challenging their agents to get healthy and help wipe out hunger in Hawai‘i at the same time.
