There are many things an organization can do in 60 years to help build a better community.
The East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club was honored for its 60th anniversary during the Kaua‘i County Council meeting, Wednesday, its anniversary serving as a reflection on what the group has accomplished on the island.
A special certificate of recognition was presented, noting the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club was chartered in 1950 as a Christian-based service club in partnership with the YMCA.
This was one of the first community programs for young men that sponsored Gray-Y athletic programs, Hi-Y (high school YMCA) and Hi-Y activities.
Through the years, the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club has made numerous contributions to the island, including organizing the first basketball and softball leagues on Kaua‘i, states the recognition certificate.
The first spelling bee was coordinated by the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club, and the organization has hosted the annual Keiki Fun Run for the past 27 years for keiki from ages 3 through 16, many of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation and the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association standout runners getting their first start at this event.
During the construction of the Kamalani Playground and the Kamalani Bridge project, the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club was among the volunteers, and continue to extend its effort in helping to maintain these facilities.
When Camp Naue needed repair, the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club stepped forward to get the facility ready so local families can enjoy a safe camping area on the North Shore, the members also coming forward as camp counselors during the annual Summer Camping program.
Going beyond the physical volunteerism, the East Kaua‘i Y’s Men’s Club is involved in fundraising for other nonprofit organizations and helps with the American Heart Association and the annual Alzheimer’s Walk.
Throughout the world, the Y’s Men International reaches eight geographic areas with a club in almost all 50 states and eight clubs in Hawai‘i, acknowledging the duty that accompanies every right, the organization’s motto.
Donna Schulze, a member of the organization, said this is what 60 years of volunteerism can do, and they’re not done yet.
