8 Kaua‘i students named as HCF scholarship recipients

PUHI — Eight students shared in more than $5,000 in scholarships during the annual Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s scholarship event, Friday at 22 North, formerly Gaylord’s, at the Kilohana Estates.

Darcie Yukimura, the Philantrophic Services Officer for HCF, said this year, the foundation was trying to gather the founders of the post-secondary scholarship funds to give the recipients an opportunity to meet them.

Yukimura said Friday’s presentation included funds established specifically for Kaua‘i students.

“Each year, the Foundation awards more than $5,000 in scholarship awards to students across the state who will be attending college or university in Hawai‘i, or on the Mainland, making the Foundation the second largest provider of post-secondary scholarships in the state,” Yukimura said in a release.

Jade Cano, a Waimea High School graduate who will be studying nursing at the Kaua‘i Community College, was the recipient of two awards — the Takehiko Hasegawa KCC Scholarship and the Dolly Ching Scholarship.

Fellow Menehune graduates Natasha Abadilla and Bessie Jane Baclig were named recipients of the George and Augusta Rapozo Scholarship while Leeann Ikeda was one recipient of the Koloa Scholarship.

Marc Abundo, a Kaua‘i High School graduate, was the second recipient of the Koloa Scholarship.

Kara Dastrup, a Kapa‘a High School graduate, was the recipient of the Takehiko Scholarship, and Lauren Baptiste of Hawai‘i Pacific University was named a recipient of the George and Augusta Rapozo Scholarship.

Bryson Victorino, graduating with the Kapa‘a Class of 2010, was named the recipient of the Ray Yoshida Fine Arts Scholarship.

The Hawai‘i Community Foundation is a public, statewide, charitable services and grantmaking organization supported by donor contributions for the benefit of Hawai‘i’s people.
