Carl Braun and the crew aboard Nani Girl came up with the big catch at the Port Allen Fishing Club 12th Annual Fishing Derby last weekend.
The Nani Girl team edged out skipper Eric Horner and the Carol Ann II team with an ahi that stopped the scales at 221.6 pounds. Horner’s crew came in with a 213.8-pound ahi for second place in that division. Ken Murakami and the Lisa M team settled in third with a 174.4-pound ahi.
But Murakami did not catch ahi as his 38.3-pound Mahimahi topped that class over the entry by Willie Abara and the Koloa Kai team, whose fish stopped the scales at 17.5 pounds. Troy Martin and the Ladye M III crew finished in third place with a 9.4-pound mahi.
Jude Schwarze and the Big Ta Do team had the only marlin of the tournament that saw the boats leave and return out of the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor. That marlin tipped the scale at 144.6 pounds.
Eric Ichimasa and the Haruko crew topped the Ono class with a 40.3-pound entry, just about eight pounds ahead of Greg Paiste and the Maya G II team, whose fish stopped the scale at 32.2 pounds. Randy Obatake and the Megan M crew finished in third at 30.5 pounds.
Clyde Ajimura and the Miss McKenzie crew topped the Aku class on a 27.2-pound entry. Howard Playe and the Late Fisherman II team captured second place with a 21.4-pound aku and Tairoy Horner with the Heavenly Rose II team finished in third place with a 20.5-pound aku.
